Quepos, Costa Rica has long held an international reputation as one of the hottest spots in the world for big game fishing. As one of the most spectacular billfish locations in the world, Quepos, Costa Rica will be the site of Marina Pez Vela, which is under construction and opening in 2009.

Puerto Quepos is a tropical inlet surrounded by primary rainforest. The village center is a delightful six-block square of restaurants, bars, hotels, bakeries, art galleries and gift shops, all fronted by the main beach and sportfishing fleet. Quepos is growing quickly yet maintains many of its sleepy and humble beginnings.

Quepeños are great celebrators of life and seem to make dancing in the streets a local pastime.

The high season runs through the drier months of December to April and explodes during the Festival del Mar, a month long party held each February that features concerts, sporting events, parades and a street carnival with dancers from across the country.

The ever-friendly locals take it all in stride, going out of their way to make sure everyone has a good time.

Local attractions include the Manuel Antonio National Park, which contains a charming combination of rain forest, beaches and coral reefs.

The beaches are the most beautiful in the country, lined with lush forest, and the snorkeling is excellent too. The forest is home for sloths, iguanas, the rare and adorable squirrel monkeys and more than 200 species of birds. The trail that winds around Punta Catedral affords some spectacular views. The park is easy to reach, south of the town of Quepos, and near many hotels and restaurants.



U.S. dollars are widely accepted and easy to convert to Costa Rican colones, as long as your dollar bills are not worn, torn or marked. Currencies other than U.S. dollars or Costa Rican colones are not recommended. Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted, though Visa appears to be the preferred credit card, especially in Quepos. ATM's are the easiest way to get cash. Larger villages and towns like Quepos have ATM machines connected to the Star, Plus and Cirrus systems and dispense local currency. Your withdrawal gets deducted from your home account at the prevailing bank rate.

San Jose is the heartbeat of Costa Rica, however, it is no longer the best jumping off point for enjoying Costa Rica.

Improved highways and inexpensive domestic air travel make it convenient and affordable to make the beach your home base and branch out from there.

Quepos and nearby Manuel Antonio National Park offer outdoor recreational opportunities a large city simply cannot match.

The village lifestyle allows you to mingle with locals in a more intimate environment. With Quepos as your home base you can take modern buses or inexpensive flights as needed for exploring other Costa Rican highlights.

The Pacific coast of Costa Rica has only recently commenced its maritime development and this will only be the second marina in the area. The facility will offer the same first-class services as you would expect in any top rated marina worldwide.

December to March is the dry season and the Costa Rican summer. April to November is the wet or "green" season. Short rains in the late afternoon or early evening during this time are just enough to cool things off, though storms can sometimes linger.



Temperatures in the extreme highlands can be quite cold while both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts are balmy year-round. The ocean temperatures on both sides average about 81º F (27º C). At 1,170 meters, San Jose claims to have the most perfect climate of any major city in the world, with a mean temperature of 69º F (21º C).
